Monopoli, the sea and the fishermen. Monopoli with its cathedral and its churches. Monopoli with its squares and narrow alleys. Monopoli with its rich past, to be discovered by walking through its historic center around the harbor. Located in the center of Apulia, 50 kilometers from Bari airport and 70 from Brindisi airport, Monopoli is an authentic city with a historic center still inhabited by the local population. The baroque cathedral, built in the 18th century on the remains of the pre-existing Romanesque building, is the most representative monument of the city whose destiny is linked to the Madonna della Madia, the Byzantine icon which, according to legend, arrived on a raft on the night of December 16, 1117. Monopoli is a city with a rich historical and artistic heritage to visit. The church of San Domenico houses the statues of the highly venerated Saints Medici, Santa Teresa with its dome towering over the entire historic center, Santa Maria del Suffragio with its baroque altars and the skeletons of the confreres displayed in wooden cases, San Francesco d’Assisi and Santa Maria degli Amalfitani with its crypt dating back to the 11th century. And then there are the 16th century city walls with the Carlo V Castle, built by the Spanish in the 16th century, the noble palaces hosting exhibitions and conferences, museums and many evocative views to be discovered with our guides.
