It is a journey of discovery of the rock civilization among the caves that, especially during the Middle Ages, hosted houses, stables, oil mills, and places of worship. Starting from the historic center of Monopoli, imagine traveling along the Via Traiana that for centuries has been crossed by armies and pilgrims. The first stop is an 11th-century crypt with frescoed walls, an underground oil mill, and an olive grove with millennial trees. The second stop is a rock church near which the remains of the ancient road wanted by Emperor Trajan in the early 2nd century AD are still visible. To get there, you follow a dirt road that crosses a vast olive grove before disappearing into the bed of an old dry stream called “lama” in this area. The last stop is the largest village in the area excavated in the rock, composed of houses, stables, barns, an underground oil mill, and, above all, a crypt dating back to the end of the 11th century embellished with wonderful frescoes, further evidence of religious and cultural ties between East and West. Finally, you return to the starting point to conclude with a tasting of typical Apulian products.
I rent mountain bikes and accessories, insurance coverage, an Italian/English-speaking guide, and a tasting of typical Apulian products. It does not include anything not expressly mentioned.
